Judiciary, EU Ambassadors Discuss How to Improve Justice Delivery

On Tuesday August 24,2021, the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo and Top Management of the Judiciary held a meeting with European Union Heads of Mission at the Supreme Court in Kololo. 

The meeting aimed at identifying areas that need to be strengthened for Judiciary to perform its constitutional mandate more effectively.

The Chief Justice commended the EU for the support rendered to the Justice, Law and Order Sector. "The Judiciary would like to render timely, equitable justice to everybody in this country and whenever you strengthen us, you strengthen our service delivery", he said.

The CJ emphasized the need for accessibility of courts of law and Judicial Officers to all the citizenry across the country. "For every region, district, constituency there is need for a Court of Appeal, Chief Magistrates Court and Grade One Courts respectively because people travel long distances to access them, which is a very big hindrance in access to justice".

He added that there is an urgent need to streamline the numbers and deployment of Judicial Officers in accordance with the nation's population and the geographical factors respectively.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, the head of delegation, the EU Ambassador to Uganda, Mr Attilio Pacifici, reiterated their commitment to support initiatives geared towards timely administration of justice in Uganda. "We have exchanged views on the role of the European Union in supporting relief of global challenges, which include delayed justice. We have further discussed issues on how we can fund the Judiciary and success of courts of law", Mr Attilio said.

He also disclosed that they had also discussed the role of the Civil Society in promoting social justice in Uganda.
